Black Bear

The Black Bear is a very cool animal and have been found in the Black Hills. I hope South Dakota will someday open a season for these awesome animals. They would be extremely fun to hunt. It would keep you alert but would be an amazing experience.

The Black Bear is an omnivore and found all across North America. Black Bears are much smaller than Grizzly Bears and are more friendly than the other types of bears. Black Bears range in weight from 90 to 370 pounds. Black Bears have an amazingly soft fur and would make a great rug in my house.

Bighorn Sheep

There are very few Bighorn Sheep in the Black Hills. If you draw a tag you may not draw another tag. If you draw a bighorn sheep tag in the Black Hills, consider yourself lucky. I have not hunted them in the hills yet but they are on my bucket list. I also want to shoot a Dall Sheep in Alaska and Stone Sheep in the Rocky Mountains..

A male Bighorn Sheep can weigh up to 300 pounds. The horns on a Bighorn Sheep can weigh up to 30 pounds. They are a very neat animal and would look great mounted on my wall. The male sheep are called rams and the female sheep are called ewes. All wild sheep like to be in high elevations and are normally found in rocky terrain. This makes them fun and challenging to hunt.

Elk Hunting

There are many places to hunt elk in the black hills. They are sneaky animals and hard to find. There are a few different species of elk in the united states. The Black Hills has the Rocky Mountain species of elk. They are a very large animal. Adults average 700 pounds and the calves are much smaller. Rocky Mountain elk like open forests and no human activity. The Black Hills National Forest is a perfect home for these elk because we have no underbrush and have a very open forest.

I have never had an elk tag for the Black Hills but my dad has shot two elk in the hills in my lifetime. I was lucky enough to be on both hunts with him. It was great fun hunting but kind of a pain to pack the animal out. We had to cut the elk into pieces and pack it out in our backpacks. We had to make four trips each to get the animal to the pickup.  They are great fun to hunt and you have to be a lot more aware but the hard work pays off in the end.

Team Realtree

Team Realtree produces a wide variety of quality made camouflage. They are a great company that does a great job imitating trees and brush. I enjoy using their camoflage because I feel like nobody or anything can see me. It is a great feeling.

Team Realtree was created by one of my heroes Bill Jordan. His first camoflage pattern came from the oak tree in his parents front yard. He has been a die hard hunter since the day he could walk. He is truely a great guy when it comes to hunting.

White tailed Deer

White tailed deer like wooded and rough terrain. This is why hunting them is so incredibly fun. Identifying white tailed deer is easy because they raise their tail when alarmed and the tail is white. You can find white tails all across North America. They do not go as far north as Alaska or northern Canada. Whitetails are all across our state of South Dakota.

I think hunting is a great sport to get into because you can get out and see what nature and the black hills have to offer. One of the downfalls to hunting the Black Hills National Forest is that you need to pack your deer out. This is a tremendously difficult task at times. If you plan to hunt alone, expect a workout.
