White tailed Deer

White tailed deer like wooded and rough terrain. This is why hunting them is so incredibly fun. Identifying white tailed deer is easy because they raise their tail when alarmed and the tail is white. You can find white tails all across North America. They do not go as far north as Alaska or northern Canada. Whitetails are all across our state of South Dakota.

I think hunting is a great sport to get into because you can get out and see what nature and the black hills have to offer. One of the downfalls to hunting the Black Hills National Forest is that you need to pack your deer out. This is a tremendously difficult task at times. If you plan to hunt alone, expect a workout.

  1. Hunting whitetails is very fun, except that the bucks are hunted pretty hard around here so most of the big ones are already taken or they are still growing.

  2. Whitetails are so smart and cunning and are much harder to hunt than Mule Deer.

  3. How much does an average white tale weigh? How do you pack out an animal that large?

    1. The average white tail weighs around 150 pounds but a buck in rut will weigh more. I usually drag the animal out whole after I gut the deer.
